Aimee Zehner, our Lead Mental Health Support, Cathartic Arts & Holistic Wellness Coach, is a Specialist in Rare Diseases, Chronic Illness, Disabilities, Trauma Recovery, Grief & Resilience. Aimee is a passionate Rare Disease Patient Advocate and actively involved in our diverse healthcare communities.
Aimee began her career in coaching after finding that her ability to help others went far beyond the traditional school setting as a Guidance Counselor. Aimee obtained her Master's Degree in School Counseling (K-12) from CUNY Hunter College, and Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education & Creative Writing, with a minor in Vocal Performance, from CUNY Brooklyn College. Aimee worked as a Guidance Counselor and Teacher within the NYC public school system, gaining valuable experience that built a strong foundation for her path in Education, Coaching and Advocacy.
Aimee's education, training, skills, talents and abilities combined with her life experiences, empathy, intuition and creativity makes her uniquely qualified as a Life Coach. Aimee is a TEDx Speaker, comedian, improv actor, classically trained singer, musician, writer, visual artist, wanna-be dancer and lover of all the arts! Aimee graduated from the famed Fiorello LaGuardia H.S. of Music, Art & Performing Arts where she received extensive training as a Vocalist. Aimee was a proud member of Solo Voice, and Opera Workshop, which gave her the opportunity to perform at Julliard, and take acting classes with NYC Opera, singing on-stage at Lincoln Center. Aimee also enjoyed singing in Gospel Choir, and other genres of music. During summers Aimee attended Long Lake Camp for the Arts where she received training in acting, improv, musical theater, vocal performance, and a range of visual arts & crafts. Aimee brings her background in the Arts to implement activities she uses with clients during coaching sessions and for their homework in-between sessions, or on retreats.
Aimee has studied both Eastern and Western religions, varied healing practices and philosophies, which enables her to connect with her client's unique spiritual, religious &/or philosophical perspectives. Additionally, Aimee was raised by a family, neighborhood and school environment that encouraged education and celebrated Diversity/Equity/Inclusion/Accessibility (DEIA) before the acronym gained popularity.
Aimee grew up embracing people with all their similarities and differences, to include: all races, ethnicities, cultures, religions, socio-economics, abilities/disabilities, the chronically and/or terminally sick, all different body types and appearances, neurodivergence, LGBTIQ orientations/identities, and walks of life. Aimee's compassion for others prompted her early start as an Advocate, when she completed anti-semitism and anti-racism training with the Anti-Defamation League while attending Louis Armstrong Middle School (I.S.227). [SB, that's the same school that gave her the lifetime opportunity to attend NASA's Space Camp in Florida with Mr. Y (IYKTYK). SHOUT OUT to Mr. Y, Mr. Grambo, Mr. Schield, Mr. Shield, Ms. LaConte, Ms. Graves, Ms Opal and more, for your early contributions to my love of learning, science, the humanities & the arts!]
From JHS onwards, Aimee began using her voice to speak up for others in need, and causes she cared about. That passion for advocacy has only increased over the years. Aimee continues her own education around issues of DEIA, including important topics like anti-racism, disability & accessibility issues, and the needs of the Rare Disease/Chronically Sick communities. Living with (non-contagious) rare diseases, chronic illnesses and disabilities has given Aimee the opportunity to become an exceptional Advocate and Educator in Healthcare.
Aimee was trained in various counseling methods, Crisis Counseling & Management, Conflict-Resolution & Mediation, DEIA, and more. Aimee's approach towards coaching draws upon the counseling techniques she utilized as a counselor which are derived from: Strengths Based Therapy, Mindfulness, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, Culturally Sensitive Therapy, Feminist Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Aimee offers a guide towards empowerment with mutual respect, tough love, the "realness," integrity, accountability, kindness and compassion for her clients. Aimee has become an expert in resilience and teaches others on how to rise above and learn from life's challenges, failures, heartbreaks and losses. Aimee coaches her clients on how to become their own best advocate. If you are looking to find a therapist, consider this coach instead! Empowering coaching with Aimee provides clients with an opportunity to learn, reflect, grow, make changes, heal, change perspectives, evolve and empower themselves mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
